Meet our Team of Equine Therapists

TinkRegistered American Quarter Horse mare “Miss Tinky Venture” was generously donated to the Benevolent Warrior Ranch in 2019 by a local community member who saw her potential for helping veterans in need of equine assisted therapy. Her barn-name is “Tink,” and she is kind and patient with everyone she interacts with. Her sweet disposition and willingness to work makes her the perfect horse for beginning riders as well as advanced horseman.

MaverickMaverick is an American Quarter Horse who came to the ranch from the mountains of Waha, Idaho. Maverick arrived at Benevolent Warrior Ranch in need of a new job in 2025. He is a strong, gentle soul, and enjoys working with our veterans. "Mav" is a newer addition to the BWR Equine Therapy Team, and he is still learning the ropes. Veterans have enjoyed the chance to train him and work with him as he grows into his new job.

JoeyJoey is Matthew’s main steed, and is a large palomino gelding from the Palouse. Joey was generously gifted to Matthew by a neighbor in his time of need, and has served as Matthew’s partner in equine assisted therapy since 2017. Joey is a valuable part of many equine therapy sessions with veterans, but his high-energy spirit requires an advanced horseman for riding.

LeftyLefty is a registered wild mustang from the BLM herd in North Central Oregon. This little horse is great for building confidence with groundwork and quick-thinking horsemanship.
In Memoriam of Our Original Equine Therapist, Onyx
It is with sorrow in our voice and an ache in our hearts that we share that in December 2025, we returned one of our staff horses back to the earth. She was the best ol' gal and we are so proud of her service to us, the veterans she helped and all of the children she taught in her civilian life. She truly loved kids, all the loving she could get from those kids and trail rides. She was quite the babysitter and she will be missed by many of those young people she helped raise, especially Colton, Matthew and Lacy's son.
Onyx, American Quarter Horse mare, 21 years young. Onyx enlisted at Benevolent Warrior Ranch and joined our program 5 years ago. In that time she honorably carried 5 veterans until her recent medical retirement. During retirement she enjoyed her time as boss mare of the herd. On occasion however, she'd be called to light duty for emotional support needs only and was able to touch the lives of 8 more veterans that needed her. Her job was simply to listen. What a great listener she was.Beautiful mare, we will miss seeing your face in the pasture every morning, but you can rest easy now and pain free.
Onyx, End of Service, 12/11/2025.
